A Few Days Away
8th January 2017
EXT.- COACH WINDOW – DAY
SHARP CUT into
A girl (REBECCA) is dreamily looking out of a coach window.
She is unhappy and somewhat distracted. She unlocks her
phone and flicks through photos: some of her and family,
some with friends and some of her with a boyfriend. We hear
a voiceover as she flicks through an album of her and the
Listen, I’ve been thinking we
What? What do you mean?
I’m just…I’m just not very happy.
How can you be unhappy? I love you!
But I don’t love you anymore.
Rebecca flicks to a different album, one of her and her mum.
I’m going away for a couple of
days, Mum. I haven’t been feeling
myself lately, and I’m hoping if I
go away for a weekend I’ll start to
If you’re sure, love. You’re right,
you know, you haven;t been the same
since Matt…I think this could be
good for you. What’s the worst that
EXT. COACH – NIGHT
We seen Rebecca at the window again. It is now night.
Slowly, she closes her eyes and goes to sleep.
SHARP CUT TO
EXT. SOPHIE’S HOUSE – DAY
Rebecca walks up to the Airbnb. It is a small detached
modern townhouse. It does not seem out of the ordinary.
Walking up the couple of steps, Rebecca braces herself and
lets herself in to see…
The house is nicely decorated. The furniture is mismatched
and kitchy, there are trinkets and ornaments cluttering
every surfaces, and there is a disorganised pile of
university books and papers in the corner. rebecca puts down
her suitcase and reaches out to a note labelled ’Rebecca’.
Hi Rebecca! Hope you are well and
that you like my humble abode,
especially since this is going to
be your home for the next few days.
Please help yourself to any food or
bathbombs, anything you want, they
can all be replaced! Hope you have
a lovely time, love Sophie. kiss
Rebecca puts down the note before taking her suitcase into
the spare room.
EXT. HOUSE FRONT DOOR – NIGHT
Rebecca is walking back to the house. She is dressed up and
giggling. She is on the phone with her mum.
Yeah, thought I’d meet up with
Vicky while I was here…Vicky? You
know Vicky!…Vicky from
school!…You know, Vicky who had
all those drinks and did the thing
with the garden gnome!…The thing!
The thing, Mum, the thing, you
remember!…Yes, that Vicky!…I
know!…Listen, I’m back at the
house now Mum. Thank you for
walking me home. I’ll see you in a
couple of days. Bye bye Mummy.
Giggling still, Rebecca lets herself in the house. She walks
into the living room, falling down and onto the sofa.
Rebecca kicks her shoes off and picks up a photo album on
the coffee table. She flicks through it randomly before
stopping on a certain page.
It is a collage of photos of presumably Sophie and Matt, the
man we saw in the photos on Rebecca’s phone. Rebecca unlocks
her phone and gets up of the phones. It is the exact same
photo set, except Sophie is replacing Rebecca in the album,
kissing Matt on the cheek. Noticeably, Sophie is wearing
teal nail polish and a large, gaudy, gold bracelet.
Rebecca sits there stunned. She gets up and starts to look
over the living room again. It begins to spin and Rebecca
lets out a guttural scream.
She leans out and knocks a whole table over.
That man whore!
She throws the bookshelf down.
He left me for her?!
Rebecca kicks the TV stand. The TV falls backward and
smashes. Rebecca is crying; she walks into the spare bedroom
and starts to hastily pack her suitcase.
I should never have booked this
trip, I knew it was a bad idea, all
that crap about going away and
She zips up the suitcase and drags it into the hall. Slowly,
she stops and turns. Sophie’s bedroom door is closed.
Rebecca walks over and opens it.
INT. SOPHIE’S BEDROOM – NIGHT
Rebecca walks in slowly and looks around. The room is filled
with cushions and cuddly toys and blankets. Rebecca almost
bitterly laughs to herself.
Rebecca starts to look around the room. We see pictures of
Sophie with family and friends. Rebecca graffitis them. She
comes across photos of Sophie and Matt, and Rebecca rips
She rifles through Sophie’s desk. Rebecca finds Sophie’s
passport and looks through it.
Oh look, younger than me, nice.
She throws it aside. Rebecca looks through her make up
collection, looking impressed.
Expensive. At least the girl has
Rebecca walks over to the wardrobe and starts pulling out
clothes, throwing them on the floor. She is visibly angry.
She pulls out an identical top to the one she is wearing,
and checks the tag.
Younger and thinner. Great.
Rebecca chucks the top away and starts to look around the
room. It is trashed. Her gaze turns back to the bed.
I wonder what’s under there.
Quickly, she drops to her knees and looks under the bed.
There are lots of colourful, plastic storage boxes. Rebecca
pulls the closest box to her out and unclips it. She mutters
What’s going to be in here, Sophie? Are all your dirty little secrets
hidden in here?
Slowly she opens the box. We see an arm, with teal green
nails and a gaudy gold bracelet, fall out of the box.
