Review: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the London Palladium

On Wednesday 24th July my mum and I went to the London Palladium to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. A classic musical, neither of us had seen a professional production, even though I had been in a production as a child!

I was quite impressed with the production. The musicians were fantastic and I really enjoyed their little musical break after the interval. I liked the fact that the scenery wasn’t that over the top, which allowed the production to move quite quickly. However, I thought maybe it went a bit too quickly, as it was only two hours including the interval! It seemed quite short.

The performances were fantastic. We saw the Joseph understudy, Michael Pickering, who was so good as Joseph. He was mesmerizing and we were really glad we ended up seeing him. The children in the production were all amazing and I feel like there are some stars in the making there. I was also really impressed with Sheridan Smith. After seeing a clip of the show on a television program, I was a bit worried but she carried that musical and came off very likable.

The one thing that almost spoiled the musical for me was Jason Donovan’s Pharaoh. I appreciate the twist on the character however it came off as cringy and trying too hard to me. I don’t think it showed off Donovan’s acting or singing potential and made the character more of a joke, which I didn’t think was needed. It was a shame, as this did not help the musical at all.

A good retelling of an old classic. 3.5 out of five stars.
